Broad edge letters

Time to get out the broad edged pen and get back to my roots. Italics was the first hand I learned back in 1987 (could it possibly be that long ago?) I was fortunate to live in the Western suburbs of Chicago and had a great teacher, Barbara Carlson. You never know when you sign up to take a class what the teacher will be like - mine was super!
Then my next teacher was Peter Thornton - it doesn't get better than him! I boldly sign-up to attend Camp Cheerio with no knowledge of what I was getting into. The week long experience was a game changer. I was introduced into a wonderful world of lettering!

This one is NOT italic. It is foundational. Probably should have learned this hand first . . .
The technique on both is loading the pen with varying colors as you write. Rather unpredictable. But I just love the finished look.

Mailed my Thanksgiving Day cards today to thank a few people who have made a difference in my life this year.

Our local veterinarian had his hands full with our two chihuahuas. He and his staff took terrific care of our little fellows. We are thankful to have another holiday with them both! Our older dog, Gizmo, is aging and struggling to breathe, but our vet is keeping him comfortable. Our youngster, Apollo, got into trouble this Fall by eating something toxic in the yard. But after a tough week, he his recovering.

This is one of my favorite lettering styles to spend time creating. It is a modern pointed pen hand.

Giving thanks for a wonderful Open Studio at my church! We had our second meeting today and played with leaf rubbings. After just 30 minutes of play I had completed this little piece. It was so refreshing to play and react and watch the art come to life. Ka-bam!

I have just delivered this long resolution to the client. He provided me with a copy of the original piece and wanted a replica. Trying to match someone's layout and style was a bit challenging. However it was a good project. The client's response to the finished piece was priceless - not a word, but a tear in his eyes. A reminder why the hand-executed word is still important.

Yes, this is a Zentangle Inspired Artwork - usually shared only on my other blog, but this one has some examples of my favorite type of lettering, built up capitals. Built up caps have long been a style that I spend time on. The solid black are very forgiving, stroke by stroke a letter is built and cleaned up. The ones with white space are not so forgiving, there is no going back once a line is placed. These letters go very naturally with Zentangle art.

Formal envelopes

One of my most recent jobs from the summer of 2011. These were very traditional, formal envelopes. Simple copperplate with black ink. Very proper etiquette.
The mother of the bride was so pleased with the response she got from those who received these invitations.
Here is what the M-of-B sent in an email:

Good morning Catherine,

You have gotten lots of compliments on your calligraphy ! Many people told me immediately when they received the invitations how lovely the calligraphy is ! It truly is stunning. One really good friend could not believe you did it by hand because it was so perfect !

Just goes to show, it is worth the effort!

Creative Envelopes

Here are some envelopes I created using two layers of paper and my newest style, Fraktur.
My parents seemed to save everything. I found this old paper, which I seem to remember was called onion paper. It was used back in the days of the type writer, even before the electric one. Not being able to just recycle it, I thought that a double envelope might be fun.

Step 1. On the inner layer, I wrote the first names in adark(ish) color. I tried to think about the layout of the address andstamp while placing the names.

Step 2. I went ahead and placed the stamp ( I have a tendency not to leave enough room and then wind up covering upsome lettering with the stamp.) Then with a lighter color I wrote the lastname. Added some flourishing with the corner of the marker. And then thediamonds with a contrasting color.

I did a few more for an exchange . . . the paper is so nice to work on that I have gotten carried away!

I love to attend workshops and get an opportunity to focus on calligraphy. Joyce hosted Barbara in July on a class on Fraktur. Not my first choice of topics, but to learn from Barbara Calzolari . . . too good to pass up.
I was not disappointed! We started right to work on Friday and until the down pour on Sunday. I am actually enjoying using this style! The capitals continue to challenge me, but in time . . . so here are some of my practice pages:

Wedding painting

Just finished working on a wedding painting. Watercolor work by Patty Swider, Calligraphy by me. this is just a part of the painting. This will be used as the guest registry instead of a book. The couple will then have this great framed piece to hang in the new home.
The label is their initials, the name of the wine is their son's name, and the location of the wedding is on the bottom. Very personalized.

Joyce was my first mentor. Someone who has been such a great influence on me for letters and for life. She is a gem! She is amazing! and I am truly blessed to know her. Just finished my envelope marathon.

Three jobs, 570 sets of wedding envelopes using copperplate.

Time to give my hand and eyes a break.

This envelope was one of the last. Just loved how this address got the full value for the cost of the line!

What runs through my mind when I'm doing envelope after envelope . . . who makes up these addresses???

It is like how small 'they' make the lines on forms.

Did 'anyone' really think about how loooong this address is?

And the client wanted the Junior spelled out - where?

There were other addresses that just made me wonder as well. Need to keep a book on them, puts a smile on the face when I come across some of them :)

The vote was 15(for this one) to 9(for #2).

Very interesting.

The reason I had to redo #2 was the letter 'g' in August on the first line. As Jane Farr so correctly figured out - "Maybe the "g" in August was started as an "s" - the error was caught in time to transform it into a modified "g"." This job was so tight on envelopes, only 6% extra, that I had to finish it up and hope at the end to redo it. Seven folks mentioned that pesky 'g' - mixed reviews.

The second reason I wanted to redo was the line spacing. I like deeper indents when the lines are short. Got to give extra credit points to Beth Lee who did some research - "Clearly, you abandoned envelope #2, not even bothering to cross the t's. (And Google shows that Batt is the proper surname for that address.) I guess that the "g" in "August" made it a shaky envelope, and the non-standard "O" in "Orleans" put it over the edge. Not that anyone but a calligrapher would notice either feature -- and both could be defended as calligrapher's license :)"

SO, overall, I am glad I did take the time to redo this one. I feel like I gave my client a better presentation. Your votes confirm that the redo was worth it. Your comments also show that everyone has their own taste. Which makes things so much more interesting.

So, I was at the eye doctor this week. Love when they do that "which is better one or two, two or three, three or four" and "is this better, the same, or worse". Back and forth. One or Two. Two or One.
I just finished my largest envelope job!!! 258 addresses!!! dip pen, copperplate.
I was going through all of the envelopes for the final check before calling the MOB. Since I had two extra envelopes, I decided I just had to redo this one. And then I thought, would anyone else know the difference? Was it worth another 15 minutes?

Here is what time and practice can do for your calligraphy. This is Italic lettering.

Now, this is 'Italic' lettering from my first 'job' - my own wedding. I took one class (10 weeks long) and thought I was ready to address my wedding invitations. In my own defense, the paper was very rough! but here it is . . .

Notice the postage stamp - 22 cents! in 1987.

Picking your envelopes wisely

What looks gorgeous in the sample book,

will be gorgeous but it may not be a calligraphers best friend.

This is a lovely natural envelope - which means it has fibers!

Which means a calligrapher's tool will pick up little fibers that will drag the ink on the stroke.

Here is the close up of what happens:

Look at the lower bowl of the 'a' - not what it is supposed to look like, but on the up stroke the fiber drags extra ink and causes that filled in bottom. These envelopes had another nasty problem. The green lining was dark enough that guidelines could not be seen and therefore, pencil lines needed to be put on each and every envelope. Then, due to the natural fibers of the paper, these pencil lines did not fully erase.

NOW, most folks won't notice but for the me, the calligrapher, I noticed! And it just isn't the best presentation. Moral of my comments - think about how the addresses are going to be put on the envelopes and select paper accordingly!

Best guess would be around 14 years ago because this is a book we purchased when we knew we were expecting our first child (TWINS). I can clearly see two influences in this piece. Peter Thornton with the Roman caps. Mike Kesceg with the pointed pen letters. This one had no sketch, plan or prediction of how it might turn out . . . but here it is:

Wedding Program

I have been working with a watercolorist on wedding paintings for many years. They are lovely paintings on a full sheet of watercolor paper. I add the calligraphy giving the basic wedding info - bride, groom, date and location. Then the final piece is that it is used as the guest registry and everyone signs their names. It makes for a great keepsake.
Last week I completed a variation on the theme. A bride wanted a large program posted as guests came to the wedding ceremony. Going green, she did not want to print programs only to see them thrown away. So, I created the program and left plenty of white space so that the guests could sign the piece during the reception.
It was a hit!

The paper was tucked inside four large gold photo corners. The couple was able to remove and roll it up to make traveling with it easier. They will then frame it for their home as a wonderful keepsake of their wedding.

Unfortunately, my photography skills are lacking . . . but hopefully the idea is there.

Simple Elegance - monoline copperplate

A couple put their hearts and dreams into every part of their upcoming occasion. Making so many decisions to help put their personal touch on their special day. I am always pleased when I can be a part of that. It is an honor to help them create the first impression that friends and family are going to have of their occasion. Many see their invitations as an investment in the total package for their wedding day. I'm delighted when individuals realize the value of hand-lettered envelopes on their invitations. Realizing that families have budgets, I have a solution to fit calligraphy into the budget and give their invitations an elegant feel. Mono-line calligraphy can be hand crafted quicker and yet provide the style needed to set their envelopes apart.

I was enjoying my pencils so much that I just continued . . .

There is something so wonderful about a pencil. It seems more forgiving than ink. I feel more relaxed with a pencil in my hand than chisel and ink.

I have to give a shout out to my teacher/inspiration, Peter Thornton.

His workshops have always amazed me and given me the opportunity to better understand letterforms.

After two years, I do believe it is done.
I added some pencil washes, more letters, black mat and two drawn pencils & sharpener.

I would love feedback. While I have not posted the complete finished piece, I think you can piece it together based other post. This is all done with graphite pencils.
I am building the courage to submit this to a magazine for publication. So any thoughts would be helpful!

I started it 2 summers ago while my daughter was taking skate board lessons. I've pulled it out again. Adding more lettering. A work in progress. The colors are light, to me peace does not scream - it is soft, quiet, calm. I wanted the colors to reflect that in this piece.

Wednesday I went off to the studio to work. I was able to get a good beginning to my entry for an exhibit on peace that will be held in Asheville. I worked on one piece of paper that I then cut to the four panels. I am hoping to keep it very soft even as I add layers to it.

It is designed to sit as a diamond, so rotate your head 45 degrees :)

This was created by using a black brush marker on black paper.

The ink has a different finish, so you can barely see it.

Then the negative space was colored with colored pencils.

Not all designs for wedding envelopes need to be formal and traditional, especially since so many invitations are more expressive. This is a modern style done with a traditional pointed pen. The envelopes are a metallic silver.

After viewing a post on Maria's zentangle blog I was excited to design some ornaments. After drawing the one, I realized these would make nice ornaments for a real tree. So, I cut the ornament out and put on a heavy layer of gloss. It is hard to tell from the scan, but they are separate pieces. They are so fun to make.

This is something I'm very excited about and so pleased with the results. Our local Bridal Consultants Association is having its gathering at the Grove Park Inn in Asheville, NC. This has to be one of the top rated Inns in America. Absolutely gorgeous!
So, in my continual attempts to break into the wedding industry, I volunteered to make place cards for the 20 some attendees. With only two days to work on this, I was thrilled to come up with a simple design that I think will be remembered.
I cut the trees out with one of those scrapbookers machines, painted the gold stars and hand flourished the names and some detail work. I can not wait to see these at a formal table at the GPI and get some photos for my portfolio.

Historic Wedding Certificate

This job was . . . challenging to say the least.

I first meet the client and she presented me with a certificate that was 8" x 10".

So? you might ask.

Well that means I had a 5" line for : The Monterey Plaza in Monterey, California.

and a 2" line for: Hendersonville, NC.

Also, this wedding had already taken place and was signed by the witnesses - so there was no second chance and no practice paper to test inks.

BUT . . . I still took it on, what was I thinking???

I suggested we find a good copy shop and enlarge the certificate to give me more room to work and a second chance.

Well, three weeks later it is behind me. Hopefully the client will be happy.

And the daughter will be thrilled when this is given to her as a Christmas present.

So, can I just say - what was the artist/printer thinking when they made this fill-in-the-blank? Did any one try to fill it in with the information? And it is not just this one, it is usually most of the fill-in-the-blank certificates. Would it be so difficult to ask a calligrapher what they think about the line lengths? Ok, enough of my little pet peeve - but really!

Close up of a very large project that I worked on for a local camp to honor those who have given gifts through their wills to this camp. The gold cross indicates the donor has died. This will be an on going process - adding names and crosses on a yearly basises. Because of continual changes, I designed the piece in panels so I can remove just a portion from the frame to work. (I don't know why blogger won't let this be a vertical shot, guess you just need to turn your head :)

About time I get back to the studio of Long Village Lettering

so here is my first wedding job . . . these envelopes are 11" x 16" (that is not a typo) and made of heavy brown craft board. As far as calligraphy - there were not many options I wanted to offer due to the product and that it was a rush job. So I suggested monoline Roman caps in brown ink. FYI - I cut a template from heavy plastic and used white charcoal pencil to draw lines.

This couple will be making a wonderful impression upon their invited guests that this celebration is a BIG event! I understand the invite is a poster that goes in unfolded. I'm guessing the response card must match the theme on the poster of owls and branches.With that done, it is time to create something for fun . . . but what?

This portrait was drawn by my mother (who died in 1999) of my father.

My father passed away September 1, 2010 at the grand age of 90.

I can thank both of my parents for passing along the creative gene and artistic desire to create.

How heart-warming to know they are finally back together and in God's hands.

and now for something completely different . . .

Another bride, another challenge.

A very beautiful invitation, a very challenging envelope.

The paper has some natural fibers, possibly bamboo. The envelopes are lined with dark green rice paper - glued very well. So how to address? and quickly? Luckily the bride wanted this italic style, so I am using a broad edge nib - it won't pick up the fibers as much as a pointed pen would. Mixing a black gouache with Higgins Eternal - able to scrap off any small mistakes and burnish paper to then make corrections.

Despite these aspects, they are moving along well.

Back to my art board, just 60 more to go!

Wedding place cards

I guess I am a soft touch when it comes to a young bride in distress. This was a very rush job. An out-of-town bride had some difficulties with the printers and wound up in Asheville three days before the wedding with blank table cards and place cards. I'm guessing she had arranged for these to be done by someone back home, weeks before arriving to her destination wedding, but . . . well, I did not ask for details, just no time for that. So, I pulled two long days (just like being back at college, staying up til 2:00am) completing place cards for 120 guests and 90 table cards. It was a whirlwind - but such a lovely lady. She was so appreciative and delighted to have this important detail taken care of for her.

I must share my appreciation to Baggie Goose for giving out my name!

I'm guessing her wedding at the Biltmore went smoothly with Melissa Porter (http://www.ashevilleeventco.com/about_us.php) of Asheville Events directing the festivities.

It has been a busy few days in the NC Mountains. I thought the wedding season was slowing down, but I've been getting calls, much to my surprise. I've been able to take on a few jobs even with my twins on summer vacation. The most recent was 140 envelopes. Beautiful Crane paper with a classic invitation. The report from the post office was very encouraging - many inquires for my name. It was a pleasure to complete this project on time for the mother-of-the-bride.

Pencil Calligraphy

I enjoy joining exchanges - make one get one through the mail. The above piece is a pencil work that I continue to add to. One of my current exchanges is an altoid tin exchange with inspirational cards inside. My inspirational cards are copied images from this piece, mounted on card stock. The altoid tin was to be altered to dress it up. The deadline is July 15th, then probably several weeks before I get my new tin with 9 cards inside. I'll post when available.

Another group I enjoy is a yahoo!group called Calligraphy Exchange. This group is focused on calligraphy exchanges, but they also answer questions and talk shop. It is much small than cyberscribes, so the volume is more manageable. There statement is:

Fabric & Paper

I grabbed the opportunity to take a workshop at Random Arts in Saluda, NC. This group of artists use a lot of fun techniques to alter stuff, collage and go wild. It has been sometime since I've had time to play around with this type of artwork, but I do love it! I always find it a creative design puzzle. Playing around with color, placement, texture and meaning. My piece will be a gift for my husband - shhhh! Hopefully a surprise for Christmas - not sure who will be more surprised (probably me that I completed it!) Any who, the workshop was a great day to get into a different place.

A little bit of info on the piece: it is a memory quilt of my husband's years in the Lutheran ministry. There are four spaces with photos from the four churches he has served. The center contains a cross from his grandmother's bible. Each square has a touch of red, Christ's blood. The top right is a photo from ordination - the two of us way back when. The ribbon is to indicate the red stole he received on that occasion. The first square is an image of Martin Luther from a chocolate candy wrapper from Germany! There are a lot of interesting touches like that in each square. FYI.

But now it is time to get back to work! Yes, I have a paying job for calligraphy :) Now that my wonderful twins have time off of school I have a deadline to meet. I'll post images once I get the committee to agree on the piece.

Mandalas are most well known as the intricate, meditation circles made by Tibetan Monks.

I've always thought that calligraphy is meditative and wonderfully relaxing when ink is flowing nicely on quality paper. So now I have stumbled across a design that is a match for the art.

After admiring Jane Farr's mandala work, I finally sat down to give it a go. Jane's work is stunning! I spend time on her blog and especially her flicker page. (If you click on the title of this post you will go to her blog - but maybe you already know this.) Recently, she posted instructions on making a mandala on her flicker - just the motivation I needed to get to play. What a great way to work on flourishing. Being my first, I'm not too pleased with it - but distance does improve it - so don't click to enlarge, you will be able to see way too many flaws. Perhaps I'll do one a week . . .

My power point presentation went well. There was a group of 40 lovely ladies who indulged me to talk about my calligraphic passion. I did share one personal story that I thought I would pass along.
So how important are letters to me? Well, my main consideration while determining our twins' names was . . . their monograms! Really. Since our last name is an open letter L, I wanted to be sure that the first and middle names helped to balance the monogram. So, I limited name choices to narrow or 3/4 letters - Roman cap proportions. My son was actually easy, we used Evan (which is welch for John, his grandpa) and Vance (his other grandpa). My daughter was difficult. So, we turned to the intern to find names that started with N. And we got Nadine Heather.

Now, what really makes me chuckle is that at the age of 11+, I have yet to design a monogram or even have anything engraved with their initials! Also, my daughters first letters are NHL - yes, National Hockey League!
Perhaps when I finish my two current paying jobs, I'll get to work on some monograms :)

Power Point

The ladies group at church has asked me to talk about calligraphy at their meeting this Saturday. Cover calligraphy in about 20 minutes was the only guidelines - and what got me interested in the art. 20 minutes!
I decided to take this opportunity to create my first power point - my 11 year olds are teaching me how to use the software! So I have 32 slides.

20 minutes? Oh, they also thought it would be great if I demonstrated a bit . . . really? 20 minutes? Such a wonderful challenge! Since I'm also looking forward to teaching at the community college, I've made it usable there too.

I also volunteered to create the name tags for the ladies attending . . . so here are a few. I finally opened up my Parallel Pens - not even sure how long ago I purchased them. They were a lot of fun to use, especially mixing the ink colors by touching the pens to one another! So, wish me luck . . . still need to decide what I'm going to say during the slides :)

Wedding Vows

I delivered this piece yesterday. Customer pleased. Framer had great suggestions for mats and format. This one had me doing some research at the library on Chinese brush work. I wanted the flowers very soft. The client wanted it simple - thus the choice of layout, lettering and grayish flowers. The client will be adding a photo of the couple at the top. My photos aren't great, hopefully you can see past that.

My last post was about not getting a job, but then getting several leads. To my excitement, two jobs came about at the same time with a similar deadline. Both jobs were wedding quotes for a spouse as an anniversary gift. How incredibly thoughtful. What a joy to be a part of the process. Let me start with the job I completed first.
The image on the left is of my layout piece on the computer - made this job go much faster than hand lettering various drafts! The customer approved the piece based on this layout and then a sample of my lettering.

I was so glad to get this off in the mail right on time! This is an interesting quote - it was read at their wedding. I hope I will hear back from the husband as to how pleased his wife was to get such a thoughtful gift!

Calligraphy job - yes, maybe, no

Well, for a few days I was very excited to have my first wedding calligraphy job through Lisa G. McMillan, owner and founder of Exquisite Events & Consulting. So I worked up several examples, bought the paper and mixed some ink. Unfortunately, the bride went another way - a friend. Disappointing, but some how things all work out the way they are supposed to. I now have two more jobs coming down the pipe. And in the mean time, I've made more samples to show brides and other wedding vendors.

Italic samples

I have enjoyed several wonderful days at my slant board. After spending so much time on the computer working on my new website (http://calligraphylvl.webplus.net) and my etsy store it was great to get back to a pen! My practice was focused on getting some up dated samples of my italic hand - based on classes with Peter Thornton over these many years of studying. These past 6 weeks I have also enjoyed getting back to teaching with a small group of enthusiastic ladies. It is great fun to share and encourage others in the wonderful art of italic calligraphy.

Place Cards

A wonderful wedding planner contacted me about place cards for a reception. These are just two of the samples I sent her. The top is a casual italic done with the pointed pen. The second is a simple, formal copperplate style.

The use of place cards can welcome each guest. Place cards let each guest know that no detail has been left to chance. This small touch can show how much you care about the special event and those who attend.

Usually I keep my blog for calligraphy, and especially wedding calligraphy. However, this week has been heart wrenching. To watch the daily images from Haiti is difficult - yet living through it . . . well, unimaginable. I am truly blessed to be in a country so rich, generous and free. I'm not sure when I did this postcard. But it struck me in the midst of this terrible disaster . . . Jesus gives the hope that we all need. The news last night showed a group of people dancing and praising God, even in Haiti their faith remains strong. What a lesson to learn.

I'm getting ready to teach again! I am pleased to have found a community college that is willing to offer an 8 week class on calligraphy. While getting out my old class files, I came across some designs I had done when I lived in Charlotte, NC and was a new mother of twins. These were submitted for t-shirt designs. Thanks to some encouragement and life changes, I begin a new path on my journey in the calligraphic arts.
