CONTEST

So, I was at the eye doctor this week. Love when they do that "which is better one or two, two or three, three or four" and "is this better, the same, or worse". Back and forth. One or Two. Two or One.
I just finished my largest envelope job!!! 258 addresses!!! dip pen, copperplate.
I was going through all of the envelopes for the final check before calling the MOB. Since I had two extra envelopes, I decided I just had to redo this one. And then I thought, would anyone else know the difference? Was it worth another 15 minutes?
So, here is the contest - YOU decide which one is better one or two, two or one? Write a comment and vote for:
Envelope ONE

OR
Envelope TWO

BONUS - can you figure out why I needed to redo?
What is the prize? A laser print of:
fits an 8 by 10 opening

Contest ends July 18th (cause that is the birth date of my twins!)
Winner will be selected the old fashion way, names written, placed in 'hat' and selected by one of the twins. Winner will be published. Winner will be contacted to get snail mail of this print.
Thanks for your help!

Lovely work, kiddo! I'm voting for two - I like the slightly more left-centric address and widened zip code, plus I found the lines of the first a bit out of alignment (although it could be the photo....). I also love the stylistic flourish of the g in August...both are gorgeous, however. Certainly nothing indicates any "need" to redo! *G*

I pick envelope One - I think the centering is better.

Hi - Beautiful work! I prefer #2. I just like that the address isn't cluttered with the stamps. That said, I don't think #1 would be a problem either. (And you redid it to change Batt to Ball.)

Deciding on which one is better depends on what the last name really is..... Batt or Ball.... your copperplate is really beautiful!

Well, hmm. Clearly, you abandoned envelope #2, not even bothering to cross the t's. (And Google shows that Batt is the proper surname for that address.) I guess that the "g" in "August" made it a shaky envelope, and the non-standard "O" in "Orleans" put it over the edge. Not that anyone but a calligrapher would notice either feature -- and both could be defended as calligrapher's license :)

I like the alignment of envelope one better. Your calligraphy is beautiful, though. And no, I can't see what made you redo. The only thing I see different other than the alignment is the curlies used on the A and O. And that took me a lot of looking to find

I prefer envelope 2. The address layout seems more pleasing to me (more squooshed?). As to why you need to redo, depends on whether you needed a bat or a ball!! *wink*

I think the first one is the better of the two - from a distance the spacing is better. I have emailled you the comments about which you need to redo

Muppetsmum said...

I think the first is visually better spaced but both are superb examples of calligraphy - beautiful. I have emailled the reasons why I think you need to redo one!

The envelopes aren't clear enough on my laptop for me to comment on the writing itself. I do think the #2 seems more balanced over all. But they are both lovely.

I can't read the writing (and this is truly my laptop's fault) but I think there is some difference in the last name, so that is probably why you did a second envelope!

I know the g is different but I really like the first envelope better. Your calligraphy is wonderful. I spent years with the italic alphabet but really never ventured into copperplate - would love to - the flourishes are so pretty. Maybe I will with my new flex pen.Being left handed was a challenge to find nibs.
Beautiful work, love it. Ruth

Before I zoomed in, my gut told me #1. I prefer the balance. On closer examination, I still prefer #1. The "g" in August stands out in #2, and I prefer the capital "O" in #1 - #2 looks too similar to a capital "C". I, too, noticed the Ball and Batt difference. All in all, your copperplate really is exquisite!!!

I vote for number 2 - more pleasing to my eye. In #2 I better spacing and like that the Caps in the second line F and D aren't smooshed into the letters coming down from the names. Sorry don't know the technical terms for letter parts! Number 2 it is.

I prefer the first iteration. I belive you had to change Batt ot Ball. Crossing L's is one of my foibles when doing large batches of calligraphy.

I prefer envelope #1. You needed to change Batt to Ball. Both are lovely.

great writing, my preference is nr.1 bacause of the space is better used. I think you did nr. 2 again beacause of the poststamps are overlaping a little(?)

I prefer envelope ONE.

I like envelope #1 better, I assume you had to redo it because the last name was misspelled. Ball or Batt??

Ooh! What fun. Reminds me of the contests on the back cover of Highlights children's magazine growing up. I agree with some others, that Envelope Two had to be redone. Maybe the "g" in August was started as an "s" - the error was caught in time to transform it into a modified "g". I think envelope one has the better layout and spacing. :)

Catherine, I deleted my first comment after looking at this again as I realized it was not 'going uphill' - it was that 7 is higher than the other numbers. Still - they are both gorgeous and I didn't want to leava that out there!! ...or it could be the 'g' on the second one?? I am sure they would love either - but my preference is still the first one. I like the spacing and placement better. :)

i would say that envelope two is the redo. in envelope one the descenders on line one are a bit too close the ascenders in the 2nd line. however, both are lovely and the bride will be thrilled!

Catherine,

One flows better and is easier to read. Although I like the g better on #2.
I have just the place for the print in my art room. Blessings, Marsha

Both are fabulous pieces of work and I suspect that only you or another copperplate aficionado would know the difference/reason for the redo.

That said...there is a gap in the top of the A of August on #1 that is not present on #2. So my money is on #2 for the redo. The other flourishes on the A, g and O seem to be artistic flair but may not be "correct" for copperplate.

As for layout, my preference is for number one—if I HAD to choose!

letterlady said...

It's the A in August. The g is different too, but I like the A in number one best, but no one would have known the difference. They are both beautiful.
I love that PEACE print. I'm pleased to see your work!

I prefer Envelope No 2 as the postal code appears more clear than on the first envelope. Both are beautifully written and you can feel proud of your work. Greetings from South Africa. Sue Williams

I like envelope #1 better because of the spacing. Both are beautiful. It was fun to read the other comments and see that no matter which one you use, it's all good. I'm also excited to be in the running for such a beautiful print!

I like # one envelope because number one is easier to read. Both are beautiful though! Amazing work that you do!
